Welcome

A number of years ago, I found myself without a computer. I was a MS windows user and wrote text using MS office. I felt that I needed to learn html, so I sat in an internet cafe, and did an execellent tutorial, and started writing html.

A year later I was working in a tech writing house which authored using MS word.

I however was interested in chassidic folksong and found software for analizing music, called HUMDRUM. The catch was it only ran on unix.

I downloaded and installed redhat (I think it was 6.0) onto an empty partition of my computer and swiftly went into shock. At that time there were a lot more problems getting hardware working then now...

My solution was to printout web pages with solutions to my hardware problems, (many of which were easily solved, a few of which never got solved), I would then read the printouts on my train ride to work.

One day I noticed that the guy in the seat opposite me was staring at me and my printouts. He asked me what I was reading and when I told him, he said: "maybe we can help you". He gave me his card and directions to the office of the company he worked for. His company created network solutions for Linux. Within a week I was working there as a technical writer.

Being a Linux company we searched for a documentation solution on Linux. What we finally settled on after a number of tries was DocBook.

I started documenting in docbook sgml and after leaving that company moved to docbook xml with the docbook xsl style sheets and my own customizations.

I gave a few lectures on xml and docbook, which I hope in the near future to post here.

Lilyxml?

I have been using Lilypond for quite a few years now. I really like Lilypond but one of the weaknesses that always bothered me with Lilypond was its lack of enforcable structure and its non semantic markup. To remedey that situation I started lilyxml Lilyxml, an attempt to use the idea of lilyponds great ascii format but with the structure and semantics of xml. I still believe this is the way to go, but the pressures of trying to earn a living has placed this on a backburner for the time being. If anyone out there is interested in this please contact me.
